2002 Easter Seals Regatta - A Fun Race for a Great Cause!

by Ryan Vetter

There were hundreds of people in attendance at this years 6th Annual Vancouver Island Easter Seals Regatta and lots of sunshine, music, food, racing and fun to compliment them.

The racing (44 boats in total) kicked off shortly after 1:00. Division 1 saw in the top spot Kiatoa, followed by Ooga in second and Surt2 finishing third. In division 2, Hotspur took first, Fetish placed second and Overdraft third. Division 3 had Lifestyle in the number 1 spot, Seeker finishing in the number 2 spot with Reflection coming in third. Lastly, division 4 concluded with La Tache finishing first, Dark Star second and Amanita third. Click on "Easter Seals Race Results" to get more information on race results.

There were various other spectator boats out on the water, full of zealous Easter Seals attendees. Some of the boats had crew persons armed with super-soakers that were chasing other, sometimes more innocent (unarmed) boats around spraying those unsuspecting boat spectators when the opportunity presented itself. There were also some more innocent spectator boats that would chase after other boats and throw candy at them. There was a boat filled with "Pirates" and yet another carrying crazy Beatnik Hippies playing groovy tunes. "Yeah Baybee Yah!"

The evening brought a catered Keg dinner with all the proceeds going back into the society, a band called "Elmore's Bar & Grill" played funky jazz on the grounds of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the balloon raffle tickets were popping like flies all over the place with lots of prizes to be won. Prizes ranged from a Westcoastsail t-shirt to a 1 nights stay at the Ramada Hotel in Vancouver. Tickets were only $4.00 each or 3 for $10.00.

With over 250 contributing business sponsors (the major ones being: BMO Nesbitt Burns, Pacific Yachting, Vancouver Island Brewery, The Ocean 98.5, Uniglobe Pacific Travel, The Keg Steakhouse, Cascadia Brands, The New VI and The Royal Victoria Yacht Club), 50 volunteers, the generous donations raised from pledges and boat sponsorships by the skippers and their crew members which went to the Lion's Society of BC and on site sales, $65,000.00 was raised for children with disabilities on Vancouver Island, passing the 2001 Easter Seals Regatta figure by $17,500. See you next year!
