Warning: RCMP and Coast Guard Patrolling Local Watersby Ken Neilson
A warning to all boaters: the RCMP Marine Division and the Canadian Coast Guard are actively patrolling local waters and boarding some boats. They are inspecting for conformity to Marine Safety Requirements, and in some cases fining mariners quite heavily ($70.00 per infraction) for non-compliance.
Big ticket items include outdated, improper, or no flares, outdated or improper fire extinguishers, improper throwing devices, lifejackets that do not fit occupants (and they do try them on individuals for checking) and failure to carry and produce a restricted radio operators license.
They were quite active in Colbourne Passage over the weekend.
